Prague - Squatters and their supporters commemorated today the five years since the violent eviction of the Milada villa, the last long-term occupied squat in Prague. In 2009, it was cleared by a hired agency with the help of police. Since then, squatters have pointed out that the building continues to deteriorate. The organizers planned today's event near the villa, but the police cordoned off the area with tape in the morning and did not allow squatters to approach the villa. Therefore, the participants of the happening gathered under a nearby bridge. During the afternoon, 50 to 100 people gathered at the site. One of the organizers, Arnošt Novák from the initiative "Occupy and Live," disagrees with the police's actions. "I would like the police commander to justify this intervention and the funds expended on it," Novák told ČTK. The police also checked all the students heading to the halls of residence on November 17th, which is adjacent to the villa. The event had a peaceful character, and the police have not yet had to deal with any significant incidents. So far, the situation from 2012 is not repeating. Back then, during a similar event, some squatters unlawfully entered the villa, and the police had to intervene against them. Part of today's happening, called "Reconstruction of the Battle for Milada," includes concerts, but a planned footbag tournament did not take place. The playground is, in fact, on land surrounded by police tape. As the highlight of the event, the organizers prepared a theatrical performance in which they reconstructed the events from 2012. The previous intervention of the security forces was also challenged by squatters in court. However, on Wednesday, the court sided with the police. Therefore, squatters plan to file a cassation complaint against the verdict to the Supreme Administrative Court in Brno. Squatters are a community of people living in abandoned buildings without proper authorization.
