Brno - The Ministry of Culture is ready to co-finance the construction of the Janáček Cultural Centre in Brno with a sum of 600 million Czech crowns. This was stated to reporters today in Brno by Minister of Culture Antonín Staněk (ČSSD). The budget for the next year includes 200 million, with the same amount expected in 2020 and 2021. The Chamber of Deputies will likely definitively approve the state budget for the next year in December.

The concert hall will be built for 1.3 billion Czech crowns and will offer 1300 seats. The city is expected to contribute 600 million and the region 100 million. The city hopes the work will be completed by 2023. The Brno Philharmonic will find its facilities in the hall.

According to Staněk, the approval of the state budget will mean that 600 million is allocated for investment in the national investment plan. "We will then be able to proceed to the project registration. Registration could not happen earlier because there were no allocated funds in the budget," he stated.

The concert hall has been discussed in Brno for many years. A project for its design was created back in 2003, but the whole matter then came to a standstill. Negotiations were reopened a few years ago. On Friday, the city presented a new study that is intended to meet today's standards. It was developed by the Konior studio. Because of this, the earlier designers from the Prague studio M1 intend to go to court, as they believe the new authors could build upon their project, but not completely change it, which they consider a breach of contract.

Concerns have also been raised that the new design contradicts the existing zoning decision. According to some opposition politicians, a potential change to the zoning decision could delay the project. "Even if anything were to happen and the money is not spent in 2019, it will remain in unspent funds and will be carried forward. There are no risks from us," said Staněk. However, he noted it would be a shame for the building to fail due to potential disputes and problems when funding is already available. "It would be nonsensical to build it according to a plan that is over ten years old when Brno can have a current project with modern technology," he commented on the new design of the hall.

Brno's mayor Petr Vokřál (ANO) has previously stated that the city is aware of the lawsuit. According to him, the dimensions of the planned building in the arcade exceed the original outline, which is due to the dynamics of the structure needed for acoustic requirements. "The primary goal for the city is to ensure that the new hall is at a top technical level. Once the entire project is completed, we will intervene with all relevant authorities. I believe that negotiations with the authorities will be within the law, correct, and accommodating," Vokřál previously stated.
