Brno wants to continue negotiations with the studio that filed a lawsuit regarding the hall

Brno - The leadership of Brno will seek an agreement with the M1 studio, which won the architectural competition for the Janáček Cultural Center in Brno in 2004. However, the city entrusted the completion of the project to an international team led by Polish architect Tomasz Konior, which this year presented a significantly modified concept of a more spacious hall in a bulkier building. Studio M1 has therefore filed a lawsuit for protection against intervention in copyright.

So far, it has achieved partial success; the Regional Court in Brno ordered that the M1 studio architects be recognized as authors of the architectural and urban design in the document describing the connection of construction phases.

"Brno Communications are familiarizing themselves with the text of the preliminary injunction so that we know how to respond legally; it is possible to appeal against the decision," said deputy mayor Matěj Hollan (Žít Brno) to reporters today. The deputy for investments, Richard Mrázek (ANO), sees no problem in adding names.

Hollan considers M1's lawsuit a peculiar approach, surprising Mrázek. "Before suing someone, it is better to sit at the same table," said Mrázek. "

"We will talk to them to see if they want to withdraw it; our interest is different, to achieve a top hall of world standards with the best acoustics. The winning team that won the competition gives a presumption that it will be that way," said Hollan. He added that the M1 studio also participated in the tender for the completion of the project documentation but did not pass the qualification round.

The lawsuit by the M1 studio is directed against the city of Brno, the municipal joint-stock company Brno Communications, Konior's studio, and the collaborating Brno studio Architekti Hrůša a spol. According to the lawsuit, the new team of designers deviated so much from the original proposal that it constituted a change in the author's work without the authors' consent.

"Please ensure the return of the Janáček Cultural Center project back to feasible tracks in accordance with the valid zoning decision, so that we can all expect the completion of the building by the end of 2020, as you planned, and not additional decades of delays and wasted effort,"
stated the M1 studio in an open letter to Mayor Petr Vokřál (ANO).

The Ministry of Culture is ready to co-finance the hall between Besední and Veselá streets with a contribution of 600 million crowns. Total costs could reach up to 1.5 billion crowns. The underground garages are currently finished, but they are not yet in operation.
