Prague – Structural engineers today warned against unconsidered entry into water-damaged buildings. All structures should first be inspected by a professional, the Czech Chamber of Authorized Engineers and Technicians Active in Construction (ČKAIT) alerted in a press release today. They urged structural engineers to assist in the aftermath of the floods currently affecting the Czech Republic.
"In the case of deformations, cracks, or misaligned doors and windows, do not enter and call an authorized structural engineer who will determine further measures or clear the house for occupancy,” stated Ladislav Bukovský on behalf of ČKAIT. Water from wells should not be used after floods or inundations. Experts recommend disposing of all food or crops that have been contaminated by the floodwaters. They also do not recommend reusing packaged or canned food. Protection for skin and eyes is essential during cleanup.
"I estimate that in the coming days after the water recedes, dozens of structural engineers and subsequently other authorized specialists will be needed,” noted ČKAIT Chairman Robert Špalek. "In affected areas, we recommend contacting our regional offices, which have the best overview of our specialists in individual regions,” he added.
The chamber brings together more than 32,000 civil engineers and technicians, of which about 1,200 are authorized structural engineers and 17,000 are authorized specialists in the field of building construction.
