Prague – The construction of the HolKa footbridge connecting Holešovice and Karlín will begin at the end of this summer. Prague has now obtained a valid building permit. It will be completed by the end of 2022. CTK was informed today by Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Prague Together). Prague announced a public contract for the contractor in the first half of April. The costs will be a maximum of 197 million CZK. The footbridge will make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to reach Štvanice Island and will provide another connection between Holešovice and Karlín, which has been served by the HolKa ferry since the summer of 2015. The authors of the footbridge are architects Petr Tej and Marek Blank.
"The project of the footbridge between Holešovice and Karlín marks an important milestone. Pedestrians will receive a quality connection and the opportunity for a beautiful view of Prague Castle. At the same time, it will allow us to reach the gates of the Holešovice Market from Karlín in just a few minutes and provide comfortable access to Štvanice Island. After last year's opening of the Troja footbridge, we are successfully advancing another important project," said Scheinherr.
On the Holešovice bank of the Vltava River, the entrance to the footbridge will be at Bubenské nábřeží in front of the entrance to the Prague Market. In Karlín, it will lead to the cycle path along the flood protection barrier at Rohanské nábřeží. The footbridge will span 38 meters between Karlín and Štvanice and 149 meters between Štvanice and Holešovice.
Currently, people can only walk from Karlín to Holešovice via the busy Hlávkův Bridge or take a detour through Rohanský Island and the Libeň Bridge. They can also use the aforementioned ferry. They can only access Štvanice Island from Hlávkův Bridge or by ferry. The footbridge will also serve as a connection for cyclists, linking the main cycle paths along the Vltava on both banks.
"We managed to coordinate the construction with four other important projects in the area. We will reconstruct the intersection of Bubenské nábřeží and Argentinská, during which we will also repair the tram tracks, and Bubenské nábřeží will undergo a complete reconstruction. Currently, it is almost impossible to pass through there with a stroller. It will become a pedestrian promenade with comfortable access to trams. We will also repair the 100-year-old sewage system," added Scheinherr.
Prague opened a new footbridge from Císařský Island to Troja last year. The original collapsed at the end of 2017. However, Prague has long-term problems with its bridges. The Libeň and Hlávkův bridges are in poor condition, and Palackého Bridge also requires repairs. The Technical Administration of Communications is currently repairing the pillars of the heavily used Barrandov Bridge.
