The City Hall of Prague announced on April 10, 2017, an architectural and structural competition for the bridge connecting Holešovice and Karlín, which should ensure direct and barrier-free connectivity between Karlín and Holešovice and access to Štvanice Island. The organizer of the competition is the Institute of Planning and Development of the City of Prague.

The subject of the competition is the development of an architectural and structural design of a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists as a link between the banks of Karlín, Holešovice, and Štvanice Island. The proposed solution is intended to enhance the city-wide significant connection between the districts while also providing access to Štvanice Island. The bridge should provide a comfortable and easy access.
The location of the bridge is in accordance with the land use plan. On the Holešovice side, the entrance will be located on Bubenské nábřeží before the gate to the Prague market, and on the Karlín side at Rohanské nábřeží with an outlet to the bike path along the flood protection barrier and subsequently to the planned public space of the development area of Rohanský Island. The bridge will also end on Štvanice Island. The bridge will span across the riverbed at a width of 38m between Karlín and Štvanice and 149m between Štvanice and Holešovice.
The idea of a bridge over Štvanice has long been anchored in the land use plan. An architectural competition took place in 1999 for the form of the bridge. However, after the floods in 2002, flood protection measures were tightened. The reason for announcing a new competition is primarily the change in technical and legislative requirements and the deterioration of conditions related to the bridge on both banks and on Štvanice Island.
