Pec pod Sněžkou (Trutnovsko) - The construction of the new cable car to Sněžka has entered the final phase. Technicians have already begun testing the ride of the cabins on the first section from Pec pod Sněžkou to the intermediate station on Růžová hora. On the second section to the summit of Sněžka, they are currently installing the cable. By the end of October and the beginning of November, the technology for the entire cable car could be ready for testing. This was stated today by the mayor of Pec pod Sněžkou, Alan Tomášek.
The date when the first tourists could ride the cable car is something the mayor did not want to predict. "We have a completion date in March. Of course, we will try to have the cable car operating as soon as possible. So far, everything is going well," said Tomášek. He added that the technology for the lower section of the cable car is practically completed and is being put into operation.
The construction of the lower, transfer, and upper stations of the cable car is now nearing completion. "Tiles and pavings are being laid, and electrical installations are being completed," said the mayor.
The original cable car to Sněžka ended its service on the upper section last May and on the lower section at the beginning of September. The new cable car, costing about 300 million koruna, will have more comfortable cabins instead of the current open seats for two passengers. The hourly capacity of the cable car will remain at 250 people, but it should be better able to withstand the wind.
The services of the old cable car from 1949 were used by 200,000 people annually, with about half of them reaching Sněžka. The investor for the cable car is the town of Pec pod Sněžkou, which received a grant from EU funds for the construction.
