Brussels - The reconstruction of the cable car to the highest Czech mountain, Sněžka, has received the green light in Brussels. According to the European Commission, which oversees the compliance with competition rules in the EU, the support of 250 million crowns is not considered illegal state aid. The municipality of Pec pod Sněžkou, which owns the cable car, is expected to receive support from the state.
The cable car, which according to the Commission is the environmentally friendliest mode of transport, is not subject to competition due to its location.
"Given the restrictions imposed by the national park administrations, it is excluded for economic, legal, and ecological reasons that a new cable car or other means of transport to the summit could be built and operated on the Czech or Polish side of the mountain," justified the European Commission’s decision.
