Prague - The volume of construction contracts awarded by the state and public administration continued to decline in 2011. The value of public construction tenders last year decreased by about three percent year-on-year to 118.6 billion crowns, reported the engineering and consulting company ÚRS Prague, which has been monitoring construction contracts for a long time.

The value of contracts for ground construction, that is, for residential buildings and civic infrastructure, fell by 22.5 percent to 36.1 billion crowns last year. In the case of engineering constructions, the state and public administration awarded contracts worth 82.6 billion crowns, which is a year-on-year increase of 9.1 percent. "The growth was mainly reported in contracts for water management constructions co-financed by the Operational Programme Environment," said Zdeněk Kunc, director of engineering activities at ÚRS Prague, to ČTK.
The largest public contract in construction last year was a tender for the reconstruction of a wastewater treatment plant in Prague worth 7.5 billion crowns. Overall, the state and public administration announced seven tenders in 2011, each valued at over one billion crowns.
Skanska won the most public construction contracts last year. It independently won tenders worth 7.2 billion, and in partnership with other firms, it secured contracts worth an additional 2.3 billion. The second most successful company in state construction tenders was Metrostav, followed by Eurovia CS.
The basic source for ÚRS Prague's analysis are the data published in the Information System on Public Procurement of the Ministry for Regional Development.
According to recently published figures from the Czech Statistical Office, Czech construction slowed its decline to 2.3 percent in November last year after an eight percent drop in October.
