Šternberk (Olomouc Region) – The local council in Šternberk is seeking new uses for the renovated heritage-protected gazebo in Tyršovy Sady. It has invited companies and entrepreneurs to propose their projects to the city. Previously, a refreshment stand operated in the gazebo. The gazebo, featuring cubist elements, was declared a cultural monument in 2015 and subsequently renovated. Those interested in the gazebo can send their proposals for its use to the council until the end of June, and the councilors will evaluate them. The city spokesperson Irena Černocká informed ČTK today.
"The renovation of the gazebo was divided into several phases. After the static securing of the structure in 2017, all construction, roofing, and restoration work followed up to the present day, including adjustments to the surrounding terrain. The cubist structure is illuminated in the evening hours post-renovation, becoming a dominant feature of Tyršovy Sady," the spokesperson stated.
The repair of the gazebo cost 1.5 million crowns, which the city covered from its budget. The dilapidated gazebo in Tyršovy Sady was initially threatened with demolition, which did not sit well with the locals. Several hundred people signed a petition to save the gazebo at that time.
According to the city, the renovated gazebo is expected to contribute to revitalizing activities in Tyršovy Sady in the future. Proposals outlining future uses of the park will be discussed by the Šternberk council in June. According to Černocká, there is enough space in the park for sports, relaxation, games, and cultural events.
The gazebo was formally opened in the Šternberk gardens in May 1931, and its first tenant was confectioner Hans Hoffmann, who operated a refreshment stand there. According to preservationists, the building's architectural features resemble cubist constructions, though due to its inception in 1931, it is more aligned with the art deco style, drawing from directions such as cubism, futurism, and secession.
