Hradec Králové - Charles University today officially launched the construction of two buildings for the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové, costing over seven billion Czech crowns. Upon the completion of the campus in 2026, it will be an exceptional center for education and research in medicine and pharmacy in the Czech Republic. It will have direct connections to clinical practice at Hradec Králové University Hospital and the Faculty of Military Health Sciences of the University of Defense, which are located in close proximity to the new campus, university representatives stated. This is currently the largest investment by Charles University. Construction work on the campus began last summer.
According to Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS), the campus will have significant importance for the entire Czech Republic after its completion. "We must support excellent research, fields such as medicine, biomedical technologies, drug development. All of these are things that improve the quality of life and currently hold strategic significance," the Prime Minister said during the groundbreaking ceremony. According to him, the project should contribute to strengthening the Czech Republic's position as a center of education and research even in an international comparison.
The two faculties will move into the new campus buildings from long-term unsuitable facilities located in several places in Hradec Králové. The new workplaces will allow the faculties to increase the number of students and ensure conditions for the development of healthcare fields. Currently, around 1,400 students are studying at the Faculty of Pharmacy, while the Faculty of Medicine has over 1,800 students. According to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Jiří Manďák, the faculties are already increasing student numbers in connection with the project. "But this is very demanding spatially and financially," he stated.
"A background is being created here where the university will soon offer to its students and the entire academic community, not just from the Hradec Králové Region, a modern educational and research space for the fields of medicine, pharmacy, and other biomedical sciences. I believe the potential of a modern workplace will attract many domestic and foreign students, as well as new international scientific partners," stated the rector of Charles University, Milena Králíčková.
The construction part of the campus, costing 6.1 billion crowns, is being built by a consortium of construction firms BAK and Syner. The equipment of the buildings will cost approximately another one billion crowns
