URGENT: OPEN LETTER FROM ARCHITECTS TO THE MINISTER OF CULTURE OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC REGARDING THE INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NATIONAL LIBRARY IN PRAGUE FROM 24. 10. 2007
Dear Minister, Six months ago, I sent you an open letter on behalf of 23 foreign and Czech architects, the key part of which was the following paragraph:
We demand the annulment of the competition results, along with the return of the entry fees to all registered teams, reimbursement of costs for the preparation of projects to all competition teams that duly submitted their work, and also proper notification of all domestic and foreign participants in the competition. Furthermore, we demand a public acceptance of responsibility by the management of the National Library for failures in both legal and ethical dimensions.
This demand was raised based on several serious facts that were documented in the attachments of the original letter, which clearly indicate that the architectural competition did not proceed fairly.
In your response, which you sent me on November 13, 2007, for which I thank you additionally, you referred to the work of teams of architects, conservationists, and lawyers, who were supposed to evaluate the circumstances of the entire project and competition - noting that you intended to wait for their opinions, familiarize yourself with them, and then form your own opinion. The work of these expert teams was, to my knowledge, concluded in February of this year.
The signatories of the letter from October 24 are asking me what the ministry's response is to the aforementioned demand. Therefore, we expect your prompt statement.
In this regard, I would also like to request the possibility of a personal meeting to discuss the entire matter. I am available at any time.
Sincerely,
Martin Roubík
