Brno - The new church in Brno-Líšen will have a triangular nave, with glass flames above the presbytery becoming the main motif of the decoration. The architectural competition was won by a design team led by Jan Soukup from Plzeň. The Brno Diocese presented the plans to journalists today. The construction, estimated to cost 70 million crowns, could start as early as next year.

The Catholic Church has long planned a church for the housing estate with 25,000 residents. The plot on Horníkova Street was acquired years ago from the Belcredi family. Nearby, a Salesian center has grown, where hundreds of children attend groups, and masses are held in a gym under a climbing wall.

"Recently, I had about 300 believers at a service there, most of whom are young families with children; the atmosphere is lively, and the potential is great," said Pavel Kafka, the bishop's delegate for the preparation of the church, to ČTK. After the church is completed, a new parish will likely be established. Currently, the housing estate falls under Stará Líšen.

Architect Soukup aimed for simplicity in his church design, emphasizing that the interior space should be bright and feel open. "Many churches somehow distract me with everything they want to imply," stated Soukup.

From the outside, part of the church nave will rise above the terrain, as if "floating" towards the city. The bells will not be in the tower but in the wall of the nave. Their sound will carry into the valley towards Brno and will not disturb the nearby apartment blocks too much.

The church will be consecrated to the Holy Spirit, which inspired co-author of the interior design Karel Rechlík. The motif of glass flames is drawn directly from the Bible. In the Acts of the Apostles, it is written: "And there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them." The flame-tongues will be created using stained glass techniques from cast glass. "They should be suspended on invisible hangers, as if descending," Rechlík described.

The believers have managed to gather about half of the necessary funds so far. "It has been collected from donations from parishioners and believers from across the Czech Republic," stated Kafka. Whether the construction will actually start next year depends mainly on the speed of the zoning permit process. In the first phase, the church will be built, and in the second phase, a rectory with a community hall.

According to Soukup, the construction is set in an area without urban planning. "We wanted the church to be a focal point, to create the identity of the housing estate. It is quite large, but the church is in a location that can dominate this large space," added the architect.

On another Brno housing estate, Lesná, another modern temple dedicated to Blessed Mary Restituta is currently being built. Since 1989, 13 new churches and four dozen chapels have been built in the Brno diocese, along with a convent of Poor Clares in Soběšice and three spiritual centers.
