Prague - This June, the renovation of the remaining part of the Fanta building at the main train station in Prague will begin. It will mainly concern the interiors on the upper floors of the building and the government lounge and will last for four years. The reconstruction will be carried out by the consortium of companies Avers and Geosan GR for approximately 438 million crowns. The Railway Administration (SŽ) informed about this in a press release today.
According to SŽ, the aim of the renovation is to return the Art Nouveau interiors of the Fanta building to their original form. Work will be done, for example, in the offices that have so far been used by the Railway Authority or the police. New connections will be created between the building and the southern underpass, and thanks to elevators, all floors will be made accessible without barriers. Workers will remove the non-original floors of the hall in the southern part of the building, making the Art Nouveau decorated ceiling visible again directly from the southern underpass. The government lounge, sometimes also referred to as the presidential lounge, will also be restored.
According to SŽ, ordinary passengers must anticipate greater restrictions due to renovations of the toilets and adjoining spaces in the building's basement.
The main train station in Prague was opened on December 14, 1871, originally named Emperor Franz Joseph Station. The Art Nouveau Fanta building was constructed between 1901 and 1909, replacing the original, no longer adequate station building. Until 1977, it served as the main check-in area of the main station. It is named after architect Josef Fanta, who was the author of its design.
