Karlovy Vary - The repair of the Mill Colonnade will begin in Karlovy Vary. The state has allocated 78.5 million crowns excluding VAT, and it will take about 2.5 years. Petr Bursík (ODS), the deputy mayor of Karlovy Vary, stated this to reporters today. This is the largest investment the city has made in colonnades in recent years. According to Bursík, the work should start immediately after the contract is signed with the supplier.

"Yesterday (Tuesday), the council approved the winner of the tender, which is the company OHL ŽS Brno for the amount of 78.5 million crowns," said Bursík. He mentioned that the reconstruction will be divided into phases to minimize the disruption to the operation of the Mill Colonnade.

A crucial part will be the repair of the degraded stone elements of the colonnade, but there will also be interventions in the basement, ventilation of the spaces, and securing the wild springs, Bursík described.

The largest and probably most famous colonnade in Karlovy Vary was built between 1871 and 1881 based on the design of architect Josef Zítko. That is why it is sometimes called the Zítkov Colonnade. However, the last major reconstruction took place in 1958.

The price that emerged from the competition is approximately 20 million crowns higher than the project's estimate. According to city management, this is mainly due to the higher cost of restoration work. However, since the repair of the colonnade is funded by European grants, the impact on the city's budget will not be significant, according to Bursík.

As the first phases will take place primarily inside the colonnade, the operation of the colonnade with its five springs will not be significantly restricted for now.
