Ostrava - The Karviná Mining Hospital will start using a new hospital building constructed using a modular system in December. It is a unique project within healthcare facilities. CTK was informed today by the hospital director, Tomáš Canibal. The construction of the facility, consisting of 77 modules, will cost approximately 100 million crowns. A significant advantage of such a building is primarily the speed of construction of the entire structure.
According to the director, the three-story building will be connected to the existing hospital. The first floor will house orthopedic and spondylo-surgical outpatient clinics or facilities for pre-operative examinations. The second floor is planned for nursing care beds, but currently, the hospital will also be able to use it as a COVID unit. The third floor will be prepared for the inpatient orthopedic department, with standard beds, an intensive care unit, and recovery beds. Thanks to the connection to the current building, patients after orthopedic surgeries will be transported to their beds by the shortest possible route. Moreover, the building can be expanded with an additional floor in the future.
According to Canibal, the preparatory phases for the construction of the pavilion began in the spring with the relocation of networks. This was followed by the foundation of the building, which consists of piles and foundation strips. In October, the individual modules began to be assembled. The hospital is expected to take over the construction at the end of November.
"The main motivation for choosing this technology for construction was the speed of realization. If we wanted to build it the traditional way, it might even be cheaper, but I dare say that it would take two years. We will have it finished in three-quarters of a year," said Canibal.
According to him, a patient in a pavilion built from containers should not notice any difference compared to regular buildings. The new facility will meet all legislative requirements for a hospital building. The director noted that the most complicated part was the planning of the construction itself, as the containers are delivered equipped, and everything must have a predetermined place in advance.
According to Canibal, this is a unique construction. Although the system has been used in healthcare, for example, in the construction of pharmacies or outpatient facilities, its use as a hospital object is rare. "I am thrilled about it, but once we receive the building, it will show whether this enthusiasm will continue; I firmly hope so," Canibal said. He did not rule out that the hospital would use similar technology again in the future.
