Litomyšl (Svitavsko) - Restorers discovered part of the original Renaissance painting from the 16th century in the house U Rytířů in Litomyšl. The rare find came at the end of the research in the historic site. Experts found a painted rosette on the ceiling of the corridor on the ground floor. The painting is likely as old as the house, thus from the Renaissance period, restaurateur David Zeman informed ČTK today.
"This is a relatively significant and unique find. The remains of rich decoration, polychrome façade, and Renaissance ceiling confirm the special status of the U Rytířů object, a very representative house. The entrance section, where we discovered the painting, probably held some special significance," Zeman stated.
The restoration survey was conducted by Zeman together with fifth-year students from the Faculty of Restoration at the University of Pardubice. It will serve as one of the foundations for the planned reconstruction of the entire U Rytířů house. It should concern both the front wing and the rear part of the house, which has been in a deplorable state for several years. In November, restorers conducted surveys in selected areas and structures that will be affected by the reconstruction according to the project of architect Ladislav Kuba. They focused their attention on examining interiors, plaster and color layers, stone elements, and the Renaissance ceiling.
The U Rytířů house was built in the Renaissance style in the 1640s. The stone façade is decorated with relief decorative and figurative adornments, whose themes are drawn from period graphic templates. According to the figures of two armed men on either side of the central window, the house also received its current name. The house has undergone several modifications, a major renovation, and conservation in the 1960s, and its façade was restored again between 1999 and 2000. Today, the Museum and Gallery of Litomyšl hosts short-term exhibitions of fine arts in the building.
