Žamberk – On Sunday, the exhibition "Beyond the Walls of the Middle Ages" begins at the Žamberk City Museum, which the institution describes as the largest exhibition project of the year. Within the building, a castle and castle courtyard will be created, and visitors will get acquainted with the medieval and castle culture of the Orlické Mountains and foothills, as well as with everyday life and social organization. The exhibition will occupy a large part of the building and is primarily intended for child visitors, said the museum's director Jindřich Žák to ČTK.
"The exhibition is practically throughout the museum, starting already on the ground floor in the permanent exhibition, where visitors will see a wagon wall and a war horse. They can sit on both and try out the weapons and armor. Then they will pass through the first gate, behind which a armory with a blacksmith shop and a mint is built, and along the walls, they will ascend the stairs to the first floor," Žák stated.
There, they will find a small courtyard featuring a pillory and a log with an explanation of what the Middle Ages were like, how they looked, and what period they belong to. It will also describe capital punishment, the division into three estates: clergy, lower and upper nobility, and peasants, craftsmen, and serfs.
From the other two small rooms, one has been converted into a throne room with tapestries and displayed armors, historical coins, dishes, glass, and there is even a small chapel.
In the last room, there is an alchemical and scribe workshop
and also a stonemason's workshop, where people will be able to try out the activities. The museum will also display original collectible items in showcases. For example, there will be a collection of Prague groschen, the oldest written mention of Žamberk, and archaeological finds from the city and its surroundings, mainly shards and metal parts; an interesting item is a broken sword from Litice Castle. The exhibition is complemented by educational programs and will last until the end of the summer holidays.
