Olomouc - The Olomouc city hall today began a large-scale reconstruction of Dolní náměstí in the historic center of the city. The repairs, which will be preceded by an archaeological survey, will last until early 2013. The costs of this long-planned investment will exceed 110 million crowns. Most of these costs will be covered by grants from European funds, said Mayor Martin Major (ODS) today to ČTK.
The reconstruction of Dolní náměstí, which is in the city's monument reserve, will include repairs to the surface, local engineering networks, sidewalks, planting of greenery, and the construction of new public lighting. "The square will be completely reconstructed," Major stated.
Construction equipment appeared on the square today. They are preparing the site for an archaeological survey, which is expected to last until spring next year. Archaeologists will examine particularly the areas near the Marian column and Neptune's fountain, where they expect to find the most valuable artifacts. "During the survey, the sidewalks and routes for cars will be preserved on the square," said the deputy.
The repair of the square will cost 114 million crowns. Grants from European funds are expected to amount to 67 million crowns.
