Olomouc - The Olomouc City Hall has abandoned the plan to additionally place granite blocks on the renovated Lower Square, which it intended to use to improve driver orientation while driving in this part of the historic city center. Instead, city officials plan to move the streetlights closer to the sidewalks so that drivers can no longer collide with them, and install bollards in the square. This was stated by Mayor Martin Major (ODS) to ČTK.
"Project documentation is being prepared, which means moving four problematic poles that define the traffic corridor to the edge of the sidewalk," said Major. The central part of Lower Square, designated for farmers' markets and various cultural events, will be delineated by smaller bollards, according to the mayor.
The city originally wanted to place metal bollards on Lower Square to clearly demarcate the traffic corridor, but heritage conservationists disagreed with this solution. Drivers then had to orient themselves based on public lighting poles, which were placed several meters away from the sidewalk. Some drivers overlooked the poles and crashed into them.
"Heritage conservationists are thus returning to the originally proposed solution, as it turned out that defining the traffic corridor with lighting poles is not entirely appropriate and traffic complications and accidents began to occur here," noted Major.
It is still unclear how much the additional adjustment of Lower Square will cost. The city estimated the cost of placing granite blocks at several hundred thousand crowns.
The extensive reconstruction of Lower Square, which was completed last summer and cost nearly 130 million crowns, lasted 18 months. The roadways, parking areas, sidewalks, and utility networks were repaired. The Marian Column was also restored, which was last repaired 20 years ago. The repair of this national cultural monument cost approximately one million crowns. The city successfully obtained a grant from the regional operational program for the reconstruction of Lower Square, which covered 85 percent of the costs.
