Olomouc - The Olomouc City Hall is likely to embark on an extensive reconstruction of the Lower Square in the historic center of the city next year. The investment, which will include, among other things, the repair of the square's surface, is estimated to cost around 100 to 120 million Czech crowns. Most of the costs should be covered by grants from European funds. This was said today by Deputy Mayor Martin Major (ODS). According to him, the investment will include not only the reconstruction of the square's pavement but also of the engineering networks, sidewalks, planting greenery, and the construction of new public lighting. "The square will be completely reconstructed," Major stated. The exact start date of the repairs is still unknown to the city hall. It depends, among other things, on the results of the archaeological survey of the square, which is part of the city’s heritage conservation area. "Our goal is to speed up the archaeological work. The city council has therefore approved the implementation of a ground-penetrating radar survey, which will specify the locations of expected valuable archaeological finds," said the deputy mayor. He added that the archaeological survey is set to begin this year. "We would like to start construction, which is not particularly demanding in terms of construction, in the spring of next year. It could be completed in September or October of the same year," Major noted. The repair of the square is estimated to cost around 100 to 120 million Czech crowns according to preliminary estimates from the city. Grants from European funds could cover 85 percent of the costs.
