Ostrava - Today in Ostrava, the construction of the City Gate began - a residential complex in the city center. The new development project is expected to be completed in spring 2010 at a cost of approximately 200 million crowns. Representatives of Metrostav shared this information with journalists during today's construction commencement.
The City Gate residential building will offer a total of 37 apartments, ranging from 64 square meters to 119 square meters. The multifunctional building will also include commercial spaces and a two-level café. The facility will be located in close proximity to Church Square.
"Ostrava has become an ideal place to live in recent years, offering modern housing, plenty of job opportunities, and leisure facilities, and is enjoying a steadily growing interest from investors. All of this played a role in our decision-making regarding the development project," said Martina Huclová from Metrostav.
The new residential building is designed in what is known as an urban style, meaning without balconies, deep loggias, and large glass surfaces, except for the southwest facade, where loggias facing Church Square will be created. Most of the apartments will be located between the second and fifth floors.
Residential construction in the Moravian-Silesian Region is experiencing unprecedented expansion. While in 2004 companies began construction on 2,101 apartments, last year they started building 3,232. Builders and real estate agents have been talking about a construction boom since mid-2006 when the government confirmed the entry of the Hyundai car manufacturer to Northern Moravia.
In Ostrava, one of the first completed residential buildings was Podkova, which has 50 apartments in the central city district. Last year, people started moving into about 150 new apartments in what is known as New Poruba. Builders are also completing the Améba residential building next to the New Town Hall and residential buildings in the Silesian Ostrava and Hrabůvka districts. Hundreds of other apartments are expected to be built in the city center over the next three years - in the locations of Černá louka and Nová Karolina.
