Ostrava - Reconstruction begins today at one of the busy entrances to the historic center of Ostrava near the Elektra tram stop, costing approximately six million crowns. The space in close proximity to Komerční banka will feature new granite paving, public lighting, and there will also be greenery and urban furniture added, said City Hall spokesperson Andrea Vojkovská to ČTK. "This space directly connects to Nádražní Street, and its shortcomings became even more apparent after its reconstruction. We want to create some kind of gateway to the center, which will then connect to Msgre Šrámek Square, which will also undergo revitalization in the future based on the results of the architectural competition," said Mayor Tomáš Macura (ANO).
The reconstruction of the piazza in the city center should be completed within twelve weeks. It will be built according to the design of architect Ondřej Vysloužil, whose intention was to create an interesting space for gathering. "We have also added artistic elements to the space; in the underpass under the extension of Komerční banka, there will be silhouettes of angels. Works by students of the University of Ostrava will also be featured on special stands, which will change over time. A poem by Jaromír Šlosar will be placed on a concrete bench," Vysloužil stated. According to him, the goal of the reconstruction is also to remove various obstacles for pedestrians or wheelchair users.
The new granite pavement will match the pedestrian zones in the city. There will also be special lighting added to illuminate the treetops and areas that currently lack light.
