Prachatice - The Prachatice Gallery Neumannka is preparing an exhibition Icons of the 20th Century - Czech Cubism. Visitors will see solitary pieces of furniture and interior accessories made of ceramics, glass, and metals, including selected items from the works of prominent Czech cubist architects and designers. The opening will be on Friday at 6:00 PM. The gallery owner and curator of the exhibition, Jakub Nepustil, said this to ČTK.

"Czech cubism is characterized mainly by sharp edges, surface intersections, and crystalline structures. Such elements can also be observed in cubist furniture and porcelain, which will be on display," Nepustil stated. The pinnacle of Czech cubist architecture is the House of the Black Madonna in Prague.

The exhibition will feature works by architects and designers Pavel Janák, Josef Gočár, and Vlastislav Hofman. "All of these gentlemen were architects of objects, but in the houses they designed, they often became residential architects as well. They were the authors of the furnishings of the apartments down to the last ashtray," Nepustil noted.

According to Nepustil, Czech cubism is a unique movement that emerged in Prague around 1910. A group of young avant-garde architects and artists applied revolutionary cubist principles in architecture and applied arts. "Czech cubists, each in their own way, sought to disrupt the verticals and horizontals to break the conventional understanding of design and architecture, to release or capture the inner energy of matter in motion and to give to the objects with which a person comes into daily contact the form of a dynamic work of art," Nepustil said.
