Prague – This year, a completely wooden building will be constructed in the grounds of the National Technical Museum based on the unfinished plans of architect Adolf Loos. Students from the Institute of Heritage Preservation at the Faculty of Architecture will thus commemorate the 150th anniversary of Loos's birth. The model of the house will be built at a scale of 1:1, as stated by ČVUT in today's press release.
Loos designed the wooden house for the daughter of František and Milada Müller, residents of the Prague Müller Villa. It is one of the most famous works that Loos contributed to. However, he did not have time to finalize the detailed documentation for the wooden structure. According to architect and educator Václav Girsa, whose students are preparing the project, it is possible to glean the dimensions of the wooden building from the plans. The ground floor was to have a kitchen and living room, while the upper floor was intended for two small bedrooms and a bathroom. The house would also include a cellar, but this will be absent from the students' designs due to its complexity and cost. The model will be completed by the end of this year, and visitors will enter it for the first time in mid-2021. The house will have electrical wiring and presumably a screen projecting documents about Loos's buildings. Otherwise, it will remain empty. "We don’t know how Loos wanted it. We can make guesses and estimate based on his already realized buildings what the interior might look like, but we certainly don’t know,” said Girsa. However, the students will develop proposals for the color scheme and interior furnishings. From the resulting works, they will then organize an exhibition in the house.
The Museum of the Capital City of Prague and the National Heritage Institute declared the Year of Adolf Loos in January. The construction of the wooden building is one of the planned activities to commemorate Loos and his works.
