Příbram – A large-scale restoration of Jirásek Gardens in Příbram has been completed and will open to the public today. The work began in September two years ago, and the town hall divided it into two phases. It included the replacement of utilities, the refurbishment of sidewalks, historical drainage gutters, parking lots, and a bus bay. Workers also landscaped the area, installed new furnishings, public lighting, and semi-buried containers.

In the first phase, which started two years ago in September, the work focused on the area around the Hailova intersection, Jirásek Gardens, and Gen. R. Tesařík. According to earlier information, the cost of the work was almost eight million crowns. In the second phase, workers concentrated on the area in front of school buildings. The construction site extended from Gen. R. Tesařík street to Jinecká street. According to city hall spokesperson Eva Švehlová, the bill for this phase exceeded forty million crowns.

The reconstruction required traffic restrictions. The situation was particularly complicated this spring when it was not possible to pass through Jirásek Gardens due to the replacement of old water and sewer pipes. The restrictions also affected bus transportation. Only certain lines were serving the area, and alternative stops had to be established.

Jirásek Gardens were established on Panská meadow between the brewery and the former shooting range between 1840 and 1841.
In 1921, in celebration of
the seventieth birthday of writer Alois Jirásek, they received their name. It is likely that lípy trees were also planted along the school buildings at that time. In 1938, as the world was approaching the Second World War, a monument by sculptor Václav Šára was placed here, featuring the main characters from Jirásek's novel Filosofská historie.
