PRAGUE - There is no money in the budget of the city of Prague for the complete repair of Štefánik Bridge this year either. According to the original plans, the reconstruction, costing approximately half a billion crowns, was supposed to take place last year. However, there was no money left in the budget for this construction then either. It was then talked about starting the work this spring. Whether it will actually start is still unclear.
"No funds were allocated for this during the preparation of the budget,” said Radovan Šteiner (ODS), the councilor for transport, to ČTK. He will strive for the city leadership to decide on the allocation of funds for the repair of the bridge sometime in the first quarter. "It depends on whether the council and the assembly will agree to it,” Šteiner added.
The poor condition of Štefánik Bridge was identified by the Technical Administration of Communications during surveys after the flood in 2002. Similarly, Libeňský and Hlávkův bridges are in the same situation, for which renovations are also planned.
In the case of Štefánik Bridge, built in the 1950s, the load-bearing structure is to be reinforced, insulation restored, and the roadway completely replaced. Workers are also expected to repair the tram tracks, including the intersection near the Letenský Tunnel.
Libeňský Bridge dates back to 1928. One of the options for its repair is to demolish it and build a wider copy. Costs are estimated at one billion crowns. In this year's budget, the city has ten million crowns allocated for preparatory work. Originally, the repair was supposed to start in the second half of last year.
Hlávkův Bridge is now part of the so-called north-south highway. It was built between 1910 and 1914 and was enlarged in the late 1950s and early 1960s. According to the plans, its repair should start after the completion of work on the Libeňský Bridge.
