Prague - Today, the Year of Pavel Janák and Josip Plečnik will be launched in Trmal Villa in Prague - Strašnice. The year-long program, which is set to include exhibitions, lectures, and excursions to buildings, aims to remind the public of two significant architects.

Exactly 140 years ago today, the famous Slovenian architect and urban planner Plečnik was born. His name is primarily associated with Prague Castle, of which he was the architect from 1920 to 1934. This year also marks the anniversary of Plečnik's Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord, which dominates Jiří z Poděbrad Square in Prague. Plečnik completed it 80 years ago.
Janák, whose 130th birthday will be celebrated in March, was not only a significant architect but also a designer and theorist, the rector of the Applied Arts School, and after Plečnik, the chief architect of Prague Castle. Janák also dealt with urbanism, and his most famous urban project is the Prague settlement Baba.
In Trmal Villa, until the end of February, apartment accessories from both architects will be on display - Janák's original armchair, chairs, and a small table will be lent from the Applied Arts Museum, while Janák's cubist ceramics will come from the Modernista Gallery. Slovenian architect Plečnik will be commemorated with an armchair loaned from the collections of Prague Castle.
Last year, the artistic agency Foibos, which organizes the event, dedicated the year to the founder of modern Czech architecture, Jan Kotěra.
