World Architecture Day 2014 in Vysoké Mýto transformed into a series of events that attracted citizens to discussions about urban development not only in their city during the weekend from October 3rd to 5th. The Friday seminar, Saturday walk, and Sunday bike ride drew dozens of people who could familiarize themselves with the historical and planned development of the city, as well as gain inspiration from other cities.
Into the streets! Among the houses! led the paths of participants throughout the weekend, although the Friday meeting took place in the lecture hall of the Regional Museum in Vysoké Mýto. Experts with experience in planning cities of various sizes were invited. Architect Jan Vaněček showcased his work as the city architect of Týnec nad Sázavou. His thoughtful approach, where he is not just a bureaucrat but primarily an initiator of change, is already bearing fruit after just one year in the form of various projects aimed at improving public spaces as well as discussions on the long-term development strategy of the city. His interventions also include the information internet platform Týnecké vlnění. The head of the Pardubice Department of the Chief Architect, architect Pavla Pannová, presented the main principles of the upcoming spatial plan for Pardubice. She spoke about inspiration from developed cities, the emphasis on public transport, pedestrians, and cyclists, as well as urban densification and the restriction of excessive development areas. The final topic of the seminar was new methodological approaches to urban planning, introduced by architect Michal Leňo from the Institute for Planning and Development of the capital city of Prague. The current crisis in spatial planning is addressed by the Prague Metropolitan Plan, which establishes logical and clear rules instead of the usual excess of incomprehensible areas and regulations.
The Saturday walk guided participants, including several children, from the Gothic square through villa housing and post-war housing estates to recently built family houses. The route was chosen by the organizers to showcase the gradual development of the relationship between public spaces and private homes. On Sunday, participants also brought their bikes. During a ride through the outskirts of the city, they focused on the development areas determined by the current spatial plan and the route of the planned R35 communication. The conclusion took place symbolically on the top of Bučkov Hill with a view of the entire Vysoké Mýto.
Throughout all three days, passersby could also view a smaller exhibition related to the discussed topics in Přemysl Otakar II Square. "We are pleased with the positive responses to the individual events. We plan to undertake the ride through the spatial plan once more with new city representatives. We would like to contribute to better communication between experts, elected representatives, and the public, thereby fostering a higher quality of urban development.", agree the organizers from the association .proMejto and they are already inviting not only the residents of the city to the next year's event.
