The architectural and landscape competition seeking the design of a park behind the brewery seemed close to cancellation, as only two proposals were received. “We expected greater interest,” noted city architect Milan Košař, adding that it ultimately turned out there was no reason to cancel. Both proposals met the conditions and were of sufficient quality. “Each had a different approach to the addressed area,” the architect outlined. The urban concept of the park was chosen by the authors Vladimír Balda and Lucie Baldová. They cleverly utilized the two axes of Školní and Zedníčkova streets and placed a kind of space with furniture in the created area. Along the perimeter of the park, they chose a path connected to the entrances to the park. In contrast, the second proposal by authors Jakub Med and Johana Šimčíková opted for a form almost like a forest park with an emphasis on greenery. The judges had several critiques for both proposals. “In light of some shortcomings in both proposals, the jury decided that no first prize would be awarded,” stated Deputy Mayor Martin Krejza. The second prize went to the proposal by architect Balda, and the third prize was awarded to architect Med’s proposal. Ultimately, the last word, albeit reluctantly, belonged to Deputy Mayor Martin Krejza. “I was on the jury as a substitute for the mayor, who was ill. There was a situation I did not wish for, where the opinions of the professional jury were beautifully divided, and I, as a complete layman, was the deciding factor. I liked both proposals,” noted Martin Krejza with a smile. “But I liked proposal number one a bit more, so with my vote, it received the second prize. Both proposals, however, need some further development, and we will continue discussions with both authors,” he added. The city announced the competition on July 20, and architects could submit their proposals until October 14, 2016. The jury's decision was also confirmed by the city council on Wednesday. “Next year, we would like to have the documentation and all the permits so that we can apply for a grant and build the park in 2018,” outlined the next steps Mayor František Jiraský.
