Reconstruction of the KRNAP Visitor Center: Connecting History with Modern Technologies

The visitor center of the Krkonošsko National Park in Vrchlabí has undergone extensive reconstruction that respects the historical value of the building while introducing modern architectural solutions. This project, carried out in the premises of the former Augustinian monastery, is an example of a harmonious combination of traditional and innovative construction methods.

Reason and scope of the building reconstruction

The original building, built in the 18th century, served as a monastery and later as the seat of the KRNAP Administration. Due to its historical significance and worn condition, it was decided to undertake a complete reconstruction aimed at creating a modern educational and visitor center. The reconstruction entrusted to the contractor Fialkovsky s.r.o. included a complete restoration of the façade, modernization of the interior, and adaptation of the building for new exhibition and educational purposes. A key aspect was the preservation of original architectural elements, while the interior gained a modern look with an emphasis on functionality and aesthetics.

Materials and technologies used from Rigips

For the reconstruction of the visitor center, key products from the Rigips brand were essential, ensuring not only aesthetic value but also long-term durability and functionality of the interior. Special gypsum boards with glass fibers Glasroc H with high moisture resistance were used in the basement areas where humidity is high, and in exhibitions with open water surfaces. High-strength drywall boards Habito® H allowed for easy assembly of interior elements due to their high load-bearing capacity. Prefabricated elements made from these gypsum boards helped create unique museum exhibitions. Bendable boards Glasroc F Riflex provided greater flexibility in the interior, for example, in narrower spaces of the museum or directly as part of the exhibition. Since the entire interior of the museum is well and brightly lit, great emphasis was placed on the quality of the wall surfaces. A perfect appearance was achieved using the filler Rifino Top.

Prefabricated elements: innovation in construction

A unique aspect of the entire reconstruction was the use of prefabricated drywall elements from Ekomont spol. s r.o., which were manufactured using advanced CNC machines. These components not only elevated the design of the museum exhibitions but also enabled fast and efficient construction, thereby reducing costs and minimizing the ecological impact of manufacturing and on-site assembly.

Challenges and successes of the reconstruction

During the reconstruction, the team faced several complications, including the need to preserve the historical elements of the building while meeting modern requirements for energy efficiency and safety. Another challenge was the logistics involved in installing prefabricated elements in a heritage-protected building. Thanks to innovative technologies and careful planning, a modern center was created that serves as both an educational and exhibition space. The reconstruction not only restored the building's original splendor but also brought new functional uses that meet the current needs of visitors and the professional public.

The project of reconstructing the KRNAP visitor center is an example of a successful combination of history with modern technologies and demonstrates how spaces for the future can be created with respect for the past.
