Velká Bíteš - Velká Bíteš will improve the historic Masarykovo náměstí. The city has already received a grant for the construction of a new bus station costing about 39 million crowns. Further planned modifications concern the remaining southern part of the square. Once the work is completed, the central area will be more beautiful, safer for pedestrians, and offer better opportunities for holding cultural events, including the traditional Bíteš festivities. This was stated by Mayor Milan Vlček for ČTK.
"We also want to revitalize the courtyard areas; we are preparing the completion of small businesses behind the town hall," the mayor detailed further plans. The façades of the buildings should be enlivened with interesting details, such as blacksmithing works. A new water feature will be added to the two significant fountains. During the planning of the changes, there was a debate at the town hall about whether to keep the buses in the square or relocate them outside the historic center. However, it seems that relocating would likely reduce the number of people in the square with shops. "Bíteš is not a large town; in our opinion, this would rather harm it," stated the mayor. Bíteš has about 5,000 residents, but people from the surrounding area come there for work. Many cars stop there on their way to the D1 highway that leads around the town. Another discussion was sparked by the planned replacement of two-thirds of the lawns in the square with paving. "But I believe that the function of the square will improve and that it will be clearer. And the number of trees will actually increase," said Vlček. The EU has promised 23 million crowns for the new bus terminal. The city will now select a contractor. Construction work in the northern part of the square is expected to begin next spring. The new station will be equipped with shelters, benches, and information signs. An additional 15 million crowns will still be needed for the remaining adjustments to the square. If the city does not secure another grant for these soon, it is prepared to find the necessary funds in its budget.
