Velká Bíteš (Žďársko) - In Velká Bíteš, builders are starting work on the reconstruction of Masaryk Square. In the upper part, the fountains will be repaired and a bus terminal will be created there. By the traditional September fair next year, the entire central area should be newly arranged, said Deputy Mayor Tomáš Kučera (KDU-ČSL) to ČTK today. There will be less grassy areas in the square, but more trees will be added. Changes will occur in the organization of traffic, which, however, will not be restricted.
"Markets have always taken place in the square, people sold and bought there. We want to preserve that," said Kučera. Approximately 5,000 residents live in Bíteš, but people from the wider area come to work. Cars stop in the square even when traveling on the nearby D1 highway, among other things, because of popular shops and restaurants.
The city has already taken care of cutting down part of the old greenery and commissioned the reconstruction of both fountains. After the fair, which will take place this year from September 4 to 11, construction work will commence. This will last until winter. However, the main part of the reconstruction will take place next year, which will cause difficulties for motorists. "But the square will always be accessible, albeit with some restrictions. It definitely can't be completely closed," said the deputy mayor.
The reconstruction of the square has been divided into two projects. For the part that is just starting, the city received a European grant last year. The selected construction company will carry out the work for 19.5 million crowns. This includes the construction of a bus terminal, which currently stops in another part of the square. Additional funds have been promised by the union this year for the lower part of the square. The costs for its modification have been estimated at around ten million. Kučera expects that the price will drop significantly when selecting the company, just like in the first contract. It was initially supposed to cost over 30 million CZK.
