Prague - The grandson of Alphonse Mucha, John, who met with representatives of the capital city yesterday, proposed further options for where the cycle of paintings, "Slav Epic," could be located. Among Mucha's suggestions are Těšnov, Hradčany, Vítkov, Letná, or Karlín, said Prague councilor Milan Richter (ODS) to ČTK. Further discussions about the variants will take place in October. It is therefore clear that the paintings will remain at the castle in Moravský Krumlov for the time being.
The capital city considered moving the epic to the exhibition grounds in Holešovice, offering three placement options for the paintings. However, John Mucha has now expanded the options. "First, we will have to verify their feasibility. Therefore, we will meet again," Richter stated.
Moravský Krumlov has the paintings of the Slav Epic on loan from Prague, with the loan agreement valid until the end of September. The mayor of Krumlov had previously sought to keep the cycle at the local castle for as long as possible. Councilor Richter, on the other hand, wants the work to be moved to the metropolis as soon as possible. Due to uncertainties about where it will be placed, the move has already been postponed several times.
The epic, which consists of 20 large canvases depicting Slavic history, has been located in the Krumlov castle for over 45 years. However, since 2004, the castle has been owned by the same company, Incheba, which rents the exhibition grounds to Prague. Krumlov rents the halls where the epic is displayed from Incheba. The company previously threatened to terminate the lease, but in the end, both parties reached an agreement. This year, heritage preservationists criticized the technical condition of the Renaissance castle, stating that Krumlov ranks among the most neglected monuments in the South Moravian Region. Allegedly, only the halls with the epic are well-maintained.
