Bohumín – The company Severomoravské vodovody a kanalizace Ostrava (SmVaK) will modernize 2560 meters of the water supply pipeline for Bohumín in the Karviná region for 62 million crowns. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the year. This was announced by SmVaK spokesperson Marek Síbrt.
The steel pipeline, built between 1978 and 1980, leads to the water reservoir in the local part of Záblatí. "A corrosion survey was conducted, the results of which indicate a loss of material on the walls, which could pose an operational problem in the future. Considering the age and technical condition of the infrastructure, it was decided to undertake a comprehensive reconstruction," stated Dalibor Jurčák, head of the investment department at SmVaK.
The modernization of the water pipeline will be carried out using a trenchless relining method, where a new, smaller diameter pipe will be pulled into the old pipeline. "This method is more efficient, faster, and gentler on the surrounding environment, as it only requires surface intervention at the entry and exit pits. The new pipe will be made of polyethylene," said Síbrt.
During construction, the company will ensure alternative water supply through a dry pipeline. At the same time, it will replace the pipeline in the fitting chamber and implement telemetry to transfer operational data to the central waterworks dispatch. SmVaK supplies water to more than 730,000 people mainly in the Frýdek-Místek, Karviná, Nový Jičín, and Opava regions, but also in parts of the Olomouc Region and the border area of Poland. The company has around 900 employees.
