Prague - The Studio of Josef Sudek in Prague on Újezd will today open an exhibition of previously unexhibited photographs by the famous photographer from St. Vitus Cathedral. However, this is not the well-known collection of images of the unfinished cathedral from the 1920s, but rather photographs that are less known, originating from the war-time protectorate period. The exhibition titled In the Shadows of the Cathedral will last until August 30.

Sudek's former studio now operates as an exhibition hall focused on the presentation of photography and is run by the PPF Art company. The exhibition commemorates this year's two significant anniversaries related to the life of the famous Czech photographer: the 120th anniversary of his birth (1896) and the 40th anniversary of his death (1976).

The themes of the photographs in the exhibited cycle include views of St. Vitus Cathedral in both whole and detail. These are images of interiors or exteriors, architectural details, church decorations, furniture, and inventory, including items from the church treasury, presented in a variety of variants and test positives.

For the exhibition at the Studio of Josef Sudek, the curators selected a collection of approximately 30 original photographs. The images from the interior of the cathedral and its details capture Sudek's precise technique, the atmosphere of the place, and the author's ability to convey an incredibly intimate message about the war-muted monument.

Josef Sudek's double anniversary is also commemorated by the Museum of Decorative Arts, which holds a large part of the photographer's estate. For the Museum of Cubism in Celetná Street, an exhibition of his previously unpublished photographs of modern architecture has been prepared; it will last until September 18.
