Prague - The modernisation of the Smíchov railway station in Prague will start today, which will include the repair of tracks and platforms, the reconstruction of both underpasses and their extension, as well as the construction of elevators. According to the spokesperson for the Railway Administration (SŽ), Nela Eberl Friebová, the work will take place during full operation and is expected to be completed within three years. The Administration also plans to renovate the station buildings and the Prague City Hall intends to build a transport terminal for public transport at the station.
According to the spokesperson, the reconstruction of the station will only require partial restrictions on passenger movement at the station. Passengers will use only a part of the platforms to board trains. According to the spokesperson, a provisional platform will also be created. The work for SŽ will be carried out by a consortium of companies Metrostav TBR, OHLA ŽS, Hochtief CZ, and Elektrizace železnic Praha, which won the tender with a bid of 4.14 billion crowns excluding VAT.
The bridge over Nádražní Street will be a three-track bridge upon completion of the reconstruction. According to SŽ's concept, it will be followed by a new three-track bridge between Smíchov and Podskali, which will replace the railway bridge over the Vltava River. The reconstruction of the station also includes the construction of a footbridge towards Radlická Street, which will allow people access to the individual platforms and connect the station with a new district emerging in Smíchov. It will replace a footbridge that had to make way for residential development. According to Eberl Friebová, the construction of the new footbridge will cost 314 million crowns.
In addition, SŽ plans to renovate the station buildings. It has put out a tender for a designer with an estimated value of 28.7 million crowns. Apart from the renovation of the station building, the work will also include the construction of a new wing, which is expected to be completed by 2028 according to earlier information.
The third major project planned for the station is managed by the city hall. At the end of the year, it announced a tender with an estimated value of eight billion crowns excluding VAT for the construction of a transport terminal, which will replace the bus station Na Knížecí and will also include a P+R parking lot. Buses will now be accommodated above the level of the railway, aiming to connect all types of public transportation. The city anticipates the start of construction at the end of next year and completion by the end of 2030.
The Smíchov station was opened as the second major station in Prague in 1862. The current station building was built in the 1950s. The station is one of the busiest railway hubs in Prague, along with Masarykovo and the main station, which was connected ten years after its establishment.
