In January of this year, the implementation of the Maxipes Fík Embankment project in Kadaň began, aimed at rehabilitating the river Ohře's embankment line over a length of approximately 1.6 km and the adjacent public spaces into full-fledged components of the city. The river should thus be more connected to the city through various interpretations of the embankment, ranging from purely urban stone to landscaped park areas, all the way to entirely natural ones at the boundary between the city and the surrounding countryside. The project integrates engineering, transport, and land structures, with extensive landscaping modifications being an integral part. The connecting element of the entire addressed area is a pedestrian embankment promenade supplemented by a bike path. The project includes, for example, the restoration of a buried mill race, vegetation adjustments on the castle slope, terrain modifications around the boathouse, a natural open auditorium for 300 spectators, parking with an integrated social facility, and the revitalization of a derelict landscaped park adjoining the Franciscan monastery complex. An integral part of the proposed adjustments to the spaces are also artworks from a total of seven authors. The implementation is divided into 3 main sections, of which the one started this year will be completed in the middle of 2011. The costs of the realization exceed 100 million CZK. The project is mainly financed from the resources of the European Regional Development Fund through the Regional Operational Program of the Northwest Cohesion Region, initiated and co-invested by the City of Kadaň. Four architectural studios participated in the project: a3 - Vít Branda, Michal Fišer from the association třiarchitekti, Atelierum, and Projektil architekti. The vegetation modifications were contributed to by Mikoláš Vavřín and Štěpán Špoula.
