Meanwhile, as the completion of the first phase of the Ohře riverbank restoration approaches in mid this year and its ceremonial opening on June 11, 2011, work has already begun in Kadaň on the next section of the Maxipsa Fík riverbank. This time it concerns a section in close proximity to the historical core of the town and the legendary inn Kotva, which, as one of the few buildings, escaped the widespread demolition in the 1970s. The content of this Phase III includes the repair of the existing riverbank wall, the addition of its missing part, the construction of a pedestrian promenade with the renewal of the historical square space, and the cultivation of the urban resting meadow directly beneath the town's fortifications. The important connection between the historical town core and the Ohře river will thus be restored, making the riverbank a real urban space for both locals and visitors. Completion of this Phase is planned for the end of 2011. The project is mainly financed from the resources of the European Regional Development Fund through the Regional Operational Program of the Northwest cohesion region, initiated and co-invested by the Town of Kadaň. Four architectural studios participated in the project: a3, Michal Fišer, Petr Uhlík, and Projektil architekti; vegetation modifications were proposed by Mikoláš Vavřín and Štěpán Špoula. For the remaining section of the riverbank, project documentation has been prepared, with which the town of Kadaň is ready to draw further grants. The restoration of the millstream with the adjacent island and recreation areas, alongside the establishment of an information center beneath the Kadaň castle, will complete the Kadaň Maxipsa Fík riverbank in its full length of approximately 1.6 km, and this unique project in the Czech Republic in terms of scale and assignment will offer a wide range of public recreational spaces. The already realized part of the riverbank – the suspended bicycle bridge by Vít Branda received the main award in the Landscape Architecture and Garden Design category last year at the Grand Prix Architects competition and is one of the buildings nominated for this year's European award Mies van der Rohe on behalf of the Czech Republic.
