Brno

Brno - Brno city councilors today approved the plan to build a sports hall combined with a shopping center in an area known as the Western Gate after a two-hour discussion. The investment of about two billion crowns is to be covered by a private investor, while the city will contribute its land. The plot was also of interest to Brno academics who wanted to establish the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) there. According to Mayor Roman Onderka, the city will try to find other land for them. The stance of the academics is being clarified by the Czech News Agency (ČTK).
The contested site is to house a hall for 10,000 spectators, primarily serving ice hockey and basketball players. The complex would include a shopping center, which is lacking in an area surrounded by several housing estates. According to Onderka, more than 50,000 people who either live or work nearby could come here to shop.
Today's decision by the council complicates the situation for Brno universities and the Academy of Sciences, as the institutions intended to build a Central European research center on the land adjacent to the Faculty Hospital in Brno and the Masaryk University campus. The facility, where researchers would focus on fields such as biotechnology, is sought to be funded with European funds. The project could attract investments between ten and 20 billion crowns to Brno. Support for the initiative was expressed by Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek during his recent visit to the city.
However, today's resolution paradoxically also includes support for the CEITEC project. The city councilors agreed that the project is one of the significant priorities of the city. The Brno leadership will seek plots for the research center in other locations near the university campus.
The plan to build a sports hall with a shopping center in the Western Gate and to find a new site for researchers was approved by councilors from the coalition of ČSSD, KDU-ČSL, and the Green Party; the main opposition came from the Civic Democratic Party. At today's meeting, they criticized the fact that this important plan is being discussed hastily. The councilors received the proposal for the resolution only this morning, while they usually have materials available several days in advance and also discuss them beforehand in individual committees.
