Zlín - Tomas Bata University in Zlín (UTB) is completing several construction modifications of its buildings. The largest project involved the replacement of windows and the removal of asbestos-containing boards in the building on Mosná Street for 40 million crowns excluding VAT, said Jan Malý, a representative of the university, to ČTK today. The construction of the Educational Complex on Štefánikova Street has also progressed. The building was designed by architect Eva Jiřičná.

The building on Mosná Street houses the Faculty of Management and Economics, where the university had the windows, glass doors, and gates replaced. "The price also includes professional dismantling and disposal of the cement-bonded boards containing asbestos that were used in the construction of the building," Malý stated.

UTB also reconstructed the corridor on the first floor and the staircase in the university dormitories on Antonínova Street for four million crowns, and a new reception area was created there. In the UTB building in the Jižní Svahy area, the cooling system was expanded for just under seven million crowns.

The university began construction of the Educational Complex in the center of Zlín in December, adjacent to the congress and university center. The Educational Complex, costing 415 million crowns excluding VAT, will serve the Faculty of Humanities, which is currently spread across multiple buildings. The complex will consist of two buildings with six above-ground floors, connected by a central section with a large lecture hall. Three floors of both buildings have now been constructed, and the construction of the atrium has begun. "The completion date is December 2017, and the construction is currently slightly ahead of schedule," Malý noted. The lecture halls, seminar rooms, and offices will serve up to 4,000 students and 150 educators.

In the upcoming academic year, about 10,000 students are expected to attend UTB, roughly the same number as last year. "Enrollment for first-year students is still ongoing, and applications can still be submitted for some faculties. For example, the deadline for applications for the Faculty of Logistics and Crisis Management for the follow-up master's program and the second round of bachelor's studies is until September 11. We anticipate that a total of over 3,200 new students will enter the bachelor's program and about 1,940 students will enter the follow-up master's program," stated Malý, according to whom there is traditionally the highest interest in studying economics, humanities, and arts disciplines. "The faculties that teach these fields are at full capacity, and their admissions processes are closed. Second rounds of admissions are taking place in faculties with a technical focus, which have less interest," Malý said.
