The Podskalská customs house at Výtoň will be reopened from April 1. Its exhibits focus on the history of the vanished Podskalí, the transport of timber on the Vltava River, cargo and passenger shipping on the Vltava, and the beginnings of steamboat transport on the Vltava.

The name Výtoň originated from the action of cutting a certain amount of wood from tied rafts. In the earliest times, the customs house took the form of a wooden enclosure with a simple building for tax collectors. The building on today’s Rašínovo embankment is, alongside the early Baroque originally parish church of St. Cosmas and Damian, the last preserved remnant of the ancient fishing settlement of Podskalí. This settlement existed since the late 12th century, and its inhabitants gradually gained a monopoly on the timber trade that was floated here along the Vltava. The current building remains at the level of the original development and is located near the so-called loading area. It is largely a half-timbered, plastered, late Gothic building from the 16th century, decorated in the 17th century with a sandstone emblem of the New Town.

Exhibits:

Rafting on the Vltava
The central exhibit is a faithful model of a raft ship, and here you will also find tools used by boatmen and, notably, a unique pair of original oars from a raft.

The history of the vanished Podskalí – rafts and boats on the Vltava
The exhibit features a number of period photographs illustrating not only rafts and boats on the Vltava, but also a variety of "water people" at their daily work.

From the history of Podskalí
A model of Podskalí, located in the center of the exhibit, depicts the appearance of this district around the year 1870.

Cargo shipping on the Vltava
The construction of wooden ships – shifs is documented by photographs, drawings, and models of period cargo ships. Later, boats and steamers, motor tugs, and cargo vessels came into use.

Prague passenger steamboat service
The tradition of passenger steamboating began in 1865 with the founding of a company whose ships, under the name Prague Steamboat Company (PPS), still plow the waters of the Vltava today.
