Lectures

On March 23, at 7:30 PM, a themed evening called Anatomy of the New Stage will take place at the New Stage of the National Theatre, during which lectures inspired by the architecture of the New Stage will be held for the general and professional public. Experts in the field of architecture and its history will evaluate the legacy of architects and urban planners whose work has influenced the shape of the New Stage building. The professional lectures will be followed by a discussion with the present experts, and the evening's program will conclude with a unique night guided tour of the New Stage building. As part of the program, the results of the architectural competition changing the face for a new design of the New Stage facade will also be announced. The entire evening will be hosted by Vladimir 518, a rapper, visual artist, and a strong proponent of the work of the controversial architect Karel Prager, the author of the New Stage building.

As part of the block of professional lectures on the topic of the history and architecture of the New Stage, experts in modern architecture will present their contributions. PhDr. Richard Biegel, Ph.D. will discuss the historical development of the site, plans, projects, and realizations from 1918 to 1983 in his presentation titled From the National Theatre to the New Stage. Doc. Ing. arch. Radomíra Sedláková, CSc. will present a contribution dedicated to the New Stage building in the context of the work of architect Karel Prager, and finally, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the project of the National Theatre extension by architect Pavel Kupka through Richard Biegel. The lectures will be followed by a concluding discussion featuring the speakers, Ing. arch. Pavel Kupka, and Prof. Doc. PhDr. Rostislav Švácha.

During the Anatomy of the New Stage evening, the results of the architectural competition changing the face for a new design of the New Stage facade, which has been ongoing since last fall in collaboration with DUPONT, will be ceremonially announced. Following the changing the face competition is the exhibition of the same name at the piazzetta of the National Theatre, which will last from March 23 to April 29, 2010. The exhibition will present the competition designs that were evaluated as part of the competition and will be supplemented by historical plans illustrating the urban development of the surrounding area of the New Stage and the building itself.
