On Thursday, March 19, 2015, at 19:00, there will be a debate
at the Puppet Theatre, Pivovarská 15, Moravská Ostrava, not only about how to revitalize the historic center of Ostrava. The event is organized by the Antiquariat and Club Fiducia under the auspices of the Mayor of the City of Ostrava, Tomáš Macura.
In pre-election surveys, the vanishing historic center was identified by Ostravans as one of the three biggest problems of Ostrava, alongside poor air quality and unemployment. Almost all political parties have made center revitalization a key theme in their electoral campaigns. How can we bring life back to the center? How can we confront negative trends such as the population decline indicating a trend of city shrinkage, deteriorating empty buildings and shop fronts, neglected public spaces, urban peripheries, barriers for pedestrians and cyclists, or the construction of architecturally problematic buildings and urban planning inconsistencies?

Our guests will attempt to answer these and other questions:
Jan Jehlík - head of the Urbanism Institute at the Faculty of Architecture, Czech Technical University in Prague, initiator of "urbanism inventories" mapping the most current trends in urban planning
Radovan Lipus - director and author of the documentaries "Shining Cities" and the book "Scénologie Ostravy"
Tomáš Macura - Mayor of the City of Ostrava
Jiří Plos - expert on the theory and history of architecture and urbanism, including strategic planning for municipalities, cities, and regions
Petr Rumpel - social geographer and expert on urban shrinkage issues
Martin Strakoš - art historian and heritage conservationist, author of numerous books on architecture and urbanism
Cyril Vltavský - chief architect of the Office of the Chief Architect of the Statutory City of Ostrava
The debate will be moderated by Martin Tomášek from Ostrava University.

IT TAKES PLACE UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF OSTRAVA TOMÁŠ MACURA AS THE FIRST IN A SERIES OF LECTURES AND PROFESSIONAL DEBATES TITLED "WHAT NEXT, OSTRAVA?" WHICH WILL ADDRESS NOT ONLY THE ISSUES OF FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR CITY.
