Anne Lacaton,

The Pleasure of Space

Living is more than just a functional concept. It is also an expression of satisfaction, nobility, and freedom arising from the use of space. It teaches us to think about what is around us and in front of us. Architecture means the construction of a large number of situations that connect and intersect. Designing space based on the idea of living means shaping it from the inside, not from the outside as a superficial and isolated act. Anne Lacaton from the French atelier Lacaton et Vassal will show how to look at the city from the smallest scale and create generous and comfortable spaces for living. Attentive observation of the context, utilizing advantages, and transforming what already exists offer the opportunity to do more and better.

Lacaton et Vassal
is an architectural atelier founded by architects Anne Lacaton and Jean-Phillipe Vassal in 1987 in Bordeaux, currently based in Paris. The atelier has received numerous awards, including the national Grand Prix for young and emerging architects (1999). Their significant projects include the architecture school in Nantes (2009) – a lightweight steel structure, whose design creates cleverly usable space. Maison Latapie (1993), Maison Dordogne (1997), and Maison Courtras (2000) represent low-cost projects of family homes with an unconventional appearance, featuring a recurring motif of garden greenhouses. Equally interesting is the interior of Café Una in Vienna (2001, Architektur Zentrum Wien).

The Civic Association Kruh has been organizing public events and lectures focused on current events in architecture since 2001. The goal of the lectures and discussions is to facilitate a dialogue about quality Czech and world architecture and architectural creation with broader segments of the public—that is, beyond the narrow circle of professionals and architecture students. Kruh has already organized over a hundred lectures by prominent and emerging Czech and foreign architects and architectural theorists, two film festivals on architecture, and an exhibition titled Profession: Architect. It regularly publishes anthologies of Texts on Architecture. The Civic Association Kruh is also the initiator of the nationwide festival Architecture Day.
