On Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at 6:30 PM, architecture enthusiasts and supporters of Plzeň's industrial heritage will meet for the third time, this time in the small hall of the Moving Station, the building of the former Plzeň – Jižní Předměstí railway station. The topic of the next installment of the POST—INDUSTRIAL lecture and discussion series will be the completed and ongoing modifications of railway buildings and sites in Plzeň, but the conversation will also touch upon the demolition of the freight station.
The first speaker, city heritage preservationist Karel Zoch, will focus on the development of the Plzeň railway hub. He will provide a closer look at several selected buildings.
Roman Černík, artistic director of the Center for Cultural and Social Projects Johan, will present long-term cultural activities that revived the unused Plzeň – Jižní Předměstí station building as early as 2000, the subsequent collaboration with Klotz, which purchased today’s Moving Station, the collaborative journey leading to a successful application for a European grant, and finally the reconstruction of the building. He will also attempt to outline how the requirements for the new operation were reflected in the architectural proposals, how the collaboration with project authors evolved, and what the experiences have been with the annual operation of the adapted building.
The architect Pavel Kocych, managing director of the Earchitekt office, significantly influenced the final form of the Moving Station. In his presentation, he will discuss the development of the reconstruction proposal, the possibilities offered by the limited construction budget, the collaboration with conservationists, and whether and how he utilized his experience as a scenographer when designing the cultural center with theatrical functions.
Ondřej Vohradský will present the planned transformation of the space in front of the main railway station in Plzeň. According to him, this modification and all the forthcoming transport constructions nearby are intended to facilitate the movement of passengers and pedestrians and enhance the appeal of public transport usage.
Pavel Paidar, deputy director for technology at the Railway Infrastructure Administration in the Plzeň area, will focus his presentation on the preparation and reconstruction of the Plzeň railway hub. He will discuss the designs of shelters at platforms, kiosks for dispatchers, roofing of underground exits, elevator shafts, and other elements that make up an integral part of the public space. The selection of architects and designers and the possibility of organizing an architectural competition will also be addressed.
Helena Šimicová Dienstbierová, co-founder of the Plzeň Stop initiative, will be ready to answer questions from the audience. This initiative transformed the former railway building on the Plzeň – Železná Ruda line into a place for meetings, cultural events, and artistic and community activities.
The entry fee for the event is 50 CZK, and tickets can be purchased on-site or on the websites Plzeňské vstupenky and GoOut.cz. The last lecture and discussion from the POST—INDUSTRIAL series titled Architecture of Hops and Malt will take place on Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at 6:30 PM at the Formanka restaurant in the Plzeňský Prazdroj complex.
