Ábalos & Herreros studio was founded in Madrid in 1984 by Inaki Ábalos Vázquez (* 1956) and Juan Herreros Guerra (* 1958). Inaki Ábalos will arrive with his colleague Renata Sentkiewitz, with whom he works in a newly emerging independent studio. The work of the studio Á & H will be presented through a lecture titled "Changing the high rise". Á & H's reflections on high-rise buildings focus on the proper understanding of the large scale of these buildings as a possible way to reclaim the city. When integrating a skyscraper into the urban structure in the very center of the city, a high-rise building can become a variation of the hybrid landscape of a new city of our imagination.
This conceptual thinking is demonstrated by Á & H through their projects, such as: bioclimatic multifunctional high-rise buildings in Salburúa Fens, high-rise buildings in Las Palmas, Tenerife (2001-2003), or Vitoria Gasteiz (2001-2005). Their interest in high-rise buildings was also confirmed by Á & H with the book "Técnica y Arquitectura en la ciudad contemporánea" 1992 and its American edition "Tower and office" 2003. Their projects incorporate themes of eco-monument: coastal ecological park in Barcelona (2000-2004), modern composting facility and eco-museum in Pinto-Madrid (2001-2005), artificially created and natural nature - the concept of nature in contemporary public space - coastal park Forum, Barcelona (2004), urban library in Madrid (1995-2002). Other projects include an urban study of Sociopolis in Valencia (2003), library in Mexico (2003), metro station in Malaga (2003).
Generally speaking, the work of the studio Ábalos and Herreros draws from the neopragmatism of Richard Rorty, as a prerequisite for necessary conceptual - ecological recycling not only of materials but also of opinions. The starting point is a non-functionalist attitude and a definition against modernity. In their projects, they use spatial and organizational schemes that leave room for empathy, emotion, and abstraction. The dichotomy between rational abstraction and emotional grasp of the topic is typical of their projects. Great emphasis is placed on collaboration with visual artists, which enriches the creative way of perceiving things. A significant contribution to the architectural discussion is the theoretical work of both architects, which they verify through their realizations. The theoretical questions also include reflections on the role of the architect today, perceived primarily in the dimensions of the architect as a creator of methods and systems and architecture as a discipline that has the responsibility and ability to "shape" the visions of contemporary society.
Iñaki Ábalos has been engaged in architectural practice since 1978. He has served as a visiting professor at Columbia University (New York), Architectural Association (London), EPFL (Lausanne), Princeton University (New Jersey), and Cornell University (Ithaca). He is currently, alongside Jean Labatut and Kenzo Tange, a professor at Harvard University.
