Momoyo Kaijima
Atelier Bow-Wow

On Monday, March 21, Japanese architect and founder of the Bow-Wow studio, Momoyo Kaijima, will speak at the Faculty of Architecture of CTU in Prague. The lecture titled Architecture Etnography will introduce an international workshop organized in Prague by ETH Zurich in collaboration with the FA CTU.

Just as ethnography examines the society and culture of ethnic groups, architectural ethnography in the version of the Japanese studio observes public space and the life of people in the space around architecture. Observation, hand-drawing, and reflection help Bow-Wow break down prejudices about what architecture is.

What architecture means for Bow-Wow was presented for the first time in the publication Made in Tokyo, a guide to Tokyo from 2001. In simple hand drawings, it captures the chaotic reality of a city that spontaneously responds to the needs and activities of its inhabitants. Detail-drawn golf courses, food kiosks, spaces under highways... unimaginably small yet useful spaces. This experiment was at the beginning of their further projects and research.

Momoyo Kaijima graduated from Japan Women's University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, and ETH Zurich, where she has been serving as a professor of architectural behavioralology since 2017. She also teaches at the University of Tsukuba.

In 1992, Momoyo Kaijima and Yoshiharu Tsukamoto founded atelier Bow-Wow. The studio's realizations can be found in Japan, Europe, and the United States. Momoyo Kaijima and Yoshiharu Tsukamoto are this year's laureates of the Wolf Prize in Arts, a prestigious Israeli international award given to scientists and artists for their achievements in the interest of humanity. The studio last presented in Prague in 2011 with the exhibition House Behaviorology at the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery.

Momoyo Kaijima's presentation will introduce an international workshop organized in Prague by ETH Zurich in collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture of CTU. It will focus on the potential of architectural drawings, mapping urban spaces, and everyday life within them. Students will draw views of urban spaces in various locations in Prague, and collective drawing will serve as a platform for communication. The series of Public Drawing Workshops has already taken place in Zurich, Venice, and Rome.
