Complex Simplicity or Finding Answers in One's Own Practice

Zdeněk Zavřel (*1943) worked after graduating from the Czech Technical University in Prague in the Delta studio at the Combined Design Studios in Prague. From 1966 to 1968, he was on a scholarship at the progressive architectural office Van der Broek&Bakema in Rotterdam. After returning to Czechoslovakia, he joined the SIAL in Liberec, where he worked under Karel Hubáček and Miroslav Masák in the so-called SIAL Kindergarten. In 1978, he emigrated to the Netherlands and again worked with architects Van der Broek and Bakema. Since the 1980s, he has primarily focused on the design of residential buildings typical of Dutch architectural production, both with Bakema and later independently. After 1989, he re-established contact with architectural developments in our country and has served as the dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague since 2006.

In his lecture, he will focus on his own work as well as more general questions related to basic themes in architecture. He will chronologically move from his own beginnings, memories of SIAL, and contacts with Team X, to the beginnings of his Dutch emigration, including the challenges of working in an open society, designing housing, and public buildings. He will emphasize multilayeredness as one of the fundamental principles and will conclude his lecture with reflections on the educational possibilities of teaching architecture.
