Switzerland Does Not Exist (Švýcarsko neexistuje)

Thu 07 October 2010 19:30h

venue: Experimental Space Roxy/NoD, Dlouhá 33, Prague 1
organizer: Civic Association KRUH

As part of this year's lecture series We Abroad organized by the Kruh association, on the second Thursday in October, Czech architects working in Switzerland will present - Jiří Oplatek (*1944) and Ivan Koleček (*1943). Jiří Oplatek moved to Switzerland in 1969 after completing his architecture studies at VUT in Brno. He subsequently settled in Basel, where he led a studio with architect Vischer until 1993. Today, he runs his own design office, Oplatek Architekten. Oplatek attracted attention with his work as early as 1973 when he won a competition for an architecturally and structurally unusual telecommunications tower on St. Chrischona Hill near Basel (completed in 1984). Recently, he received an award for the project of a multifunctional community center in Basel, uniquely integrated under the structure of the Dreirosen Bridge.
Ivan Koleček also graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at VUT in Brno. He moved to Switzerland in 1969 and has been running an independent studio in Lausanne since 1982. In his practice, he has focused primarily on the reconstruction of historical buildings (Abbaye de Bonmot, Chesserex, 1995). He is the author of an interesting project for a prison in Lonay (1986-92). Recently, he participated in the renovation of the Palace of the Cantonal Museums, Library, and Cantonal Assembly - Palais de Rumine in Lausanne (in collaboration with Jacques Besson, Csilla Horvath).
Since the 1990s, both architects have been back in close contact with the Czech environment and have been lecturing at the FA VUT in Brno.
